MONTEVALLO, Ala. –
Sara Davis recorded a team-high 19 kills, hit .417 and added six block assists to help Flagler College rally for the second consecutive day to a 3-2 (25-20, 18-25, 24-26, 25-20, 15-11) win over the University of Montevallo in a Peach Belt Conference women's volleyball match Saturday afternoon at Trustmark Arena.
Flagler increased its winning streak to four matches and improved to 8-4 overall and 4-0 in the Peach Belt. Montevallo lost its fourth match in a row and dropped to 8-8 overall and 2-5 in conference play.
Davis had nine of her 19 kills in the final two sets, which included three in the fifth and deciding set. She also collected nine digs in the match.
Megan Hooks added 12 kills while
Ashley Cheewah and
Rachel Bryant each chipped in with 10 kills. Bryant also had a career-high five total blocks.
Tara Savisky tallied a match-high 53 assists while
Kayla Norelli anchored the defense with 25 digs.
Kristy Bohan led the Falcons with a match-high 22 kills and six total blocks. Hannah Christie tallied 48 assists while Grace Harris collected 26 digs.
The two teams split the first two sets with the Saints taking the first, 25-20. The Falcons won a highly contested third set (11 ties and eight lead changes), 26-24. Montevallo scored the last four points with the help of a pair of kills by Natalie Twyford.
Davis came up big for the Saints in the fourth set as she had six kills on eight errorless swings for a sizzling .750 hitting percentage. The Saints broke open a 19-all tie by reeling off four straight points. Davis and Hooks had back-to-back kills to finish the set and force a fifth.
The fifth set was just as close with eight ties and it had one lead change.
Genel Sturgeon had a kill for Flagler which broke a 10-all tie and then Montevallo committed a couple of errors, one hitting and one a bad set, to fall into a 13-10 hole. After a kill by Bohan, Davis closed out the match with a pair of kills.
Up next for Flagler is the "Battle of the Peach" match against PBC-rival Armstrong State University on Wednesday (Oct. 5) at 7 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
