Flagler opens conference play with sweep of Lander

ST. AUGUSTINE – Sara Davis, Megan Hooks and Ashley Cheewah helped carry a Flagler College offense to a .305 hitting percentage in route to a 3-0 sweep (26-24, 25-16, 25-19) over Lander University in a Peach Belt Conference volleyball match Friday night at Flagler Gymnasium.

Flagler snapped a three-match losing streak and improved to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in the Peach Belt. Lander dropped its second consecutive match and fell to 10-2 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

The first set saw nine ties and five lead changes. A kill by Davis gave Flagler set point (24-23) but the Bearcats were able to answer with the help of a kill by Amanda Medlock. However, Medlock's serve on the next rally went into the net to set up another set point for the Saints. Davis put away Lander with a quick spike to end the set, 26-24. Those were Davis' lone kills of the set. Cheewah led Flagler with six kills and a .400 hitting percentage.

In the second set, a kills by Hooks broke a 6-all tie and Flagler never looked back winning 25-16. Hooks finished the set with seven kills on 13 errorless swings for a .538 hitting percentage.

The third set saw eight ties and five lead changes. Flagler used a 8-0 run midway through to take control, 19-14. Taja Valmyr and Davis each recorded two kills in the run and Rachel Porada had an ace which capped the run. Davis finished with nine kills in the final set.
