ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College used a five-run sixth inning to break a 3-all tie and went on to rout former rival Embry-Riddle University 16-6 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night at Drysdale Field.
Flagler improved to 24-17 while Embry-Riddle dropped to 27-16. The 16 runs the Saints scored on the Eagles were the most in a game in the series since Feb. 2, 2003 when Flagler won at Daytona Beach, 17-12. Flagler also sweeps the home-and-home two-game season series.
In the fifth,
Bryce Evans drew a lead-off walk and on an errant pickoff attempt by Embry-Riddle starter Nick Dearing (3-5) took third base. Dearing's throw sailed over the head of first baseman Matt Jacobs and the ball went down the right field line.
Cole Ondrejka, the next batter drew a walk and that spelled the end of the day for Dearing.
The designated hitter, Joey Swinarski came in to hold the Saints down, but he allowed a single to
Igor Baez which scored Evans to give Flagler a 4-3 lead. Swinarski retired the next three batters in order.
Flagler then unleashed five runs in the sixth to put the game away.
James Jean blasted his 10
th home run of the season, a three-run shot, deep into the night over the left-field wall which gave Flagler a 9-3 lead.
The Saints tacked on three more runs in the seventh and four in the eighth.
Embry-Riddle was able to plate three runs in the ninth.
Luke Cooksey (5-1) pitched a solid three innings in relief to earn the win. He allowed two hits and one run, but he fanned six batters.
Pacing the 15-hit attack was Evans who went 5-for-5 with a triple, five runs scored and three runs batted in. Baez went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a career-best four runs batted in and he scored a run. Jean went 2-for-5 with the home run, three RBI and two runs scored.
Nick Oberg hit a pair of doubles.
Dearing, the first of six Eagle pitchers to throw, tossed four-plus innings and allowed six hits and four runs. He walked four and fanned four.
Tobias Moreno collected three singles, scored a run and drove in another.
Up next for Flagler will be a big three-game Peach Belt Conference series against No. 20 (
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30) University of South Carolina Aiken. The series begins Friday at 7 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
