ST. AUGUSTINE –
Whitney Woodard recorded a doubleheader-high six hits in jumpstarting the Flagler College Saints (22-25, 7-15) sweep over the Columbus State University Cougars (24-25, 8-14) on Saturday at Flagler Field.
Saints starter
Haleigh Corbally and Cougars starter Peyton Sorrells locked into a pitcher's duel for the first four innings of game one. Neither side pushed across until the fifth when Flagler exploded for seven runs.
Maddy Murphy led off the inning by blasting a homer to left field. The offense continued to roll as
Mackenzie Conley drove home two on a single to center prior to an RBI single by
Hannah Hudson.
Mallory Allen, the next batter, connected for a three-run shot to left field. Woodard laid down a bunt single during the frame as part of her six-hit day.
Columbus State countered with two runs in the sixth to cut the deficit to 7-2. An error followed by a single by Keeli Waugh led to the pair of runs.
Conley collected two hits and Hudson added three.
Corbally tossed seven strong innings during her complete game victory. She allowed two runs and struck out five to improve to 10-9 on the season. The Cougars sent three pitchers to the circle but Sorrells was tagged with the loss falling to 11-7.
The Cougars carried a 5-4 lead in the sixth inning of play in game two after Elizabeth Perdue sent a solo home run to left field. Conley played the part of hero in the home half, though, delivering a three-run shot to reclaim the lead for the Saints for good.
Woodard continued her offensive onslaught in the fourth to put the Saints in position for their late rally. After the Cougars capitalized on a couple of errors in the top half to take a 4-3 edge in the fourth, highlighted by an RBI triple from Katie White, Woodard evened the score by doubling in a run in the bottom half.
Early on, Columbus State mounted an early 1-0 advantage in the second game when White sent her third homer of the season over the left field wall in the first inning.
The Saints responded with three of their own in the home half. Woodard countered White's lead-off solo shot with one of her own.
Malloree Escue then drove in two runs on a double to left giving Flagler its first lead.
Hudson picked up three more hits in the second game bringing her total to five for the day.
Tinsley Smith (4-4) earned the win in the second game after entering the contest in the fifth. She allowed just one run over three innings of work. Darby Demarest (2-4), who pitched in both games, suffered the loss surrendering four runs over 4.2 innings. Demarest came into the game in the second in relief of Hanna Manley.
Flagler will wrap up the season tomorrow (April 17) on "Senior Day." The Saints welcome Georgia Southwestern State University to Flagler Field in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader. The first pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
