ST. AUGUSTINE – Seniors
Haleigh Corbally and
Tinsley Smith stifled the Georgia Southwestern State University (23-31, 7-17) Lady Canes offense on Sunday at Flagler Field as the Flagler College Saints (24-25, 9-15) completed the 2016 season with a pair of wins topping Georgia Southwestern 4-0 in game one and 6-0 in the second contest.
Corbally (11-9) allowed just three hits while striking out five hitters. She won games on back-to-back days after defeating Columbus State on Saturday. Smith (5-4) received the start for the second game and replicated Corbally's outing by allowing only three hits. She struck out three and picked up her second win in as many days.
The Saints scored two runs during the first inning of game one giving Corbally all the run support she needed.
Whitney Woodard led off the game for Flagler with a bunt single and promptly stole second base.
Tori Volz drove her in on a ball through the hole into left field and later scored on a base hit by
Malloree Escue.
Brielle Dougherty scored on an error in the second and Woodard scored on Volz's second RBI single of the game in the sixth.
Flagler struck first again in game two when Escue smacked a double to left field allowing Woodard, who walked, to score in the first.
Mallory Allen picked up an RBI in the third on a sacrifice fly and Escue scored on an error in the fifth before Flagler put up three in the sixth to cap their sweep. Volz, who had three hits on the day, highlighted the frame with a two-run double.
Malloree Escue collected a doubleheader-high four hits. The best offensive chance the Lady Canes presented came in the second inning of the second game. Georgia Southwestern loaded the bases with one out but Smith struck out Hannah McCain and popped Grayson Sanders up to end the threat.
Brittany Childs (7-11) suffered the loss for the Lady Canes in game one and Haley Goodson (9-14) was tagged with the loss in the second game. Childs allowed four runs on eight hits through six innings and Goodson surrender six runs over six.
