Flagler scores early and often for 8-6 win at UNCP

PEMBROKE, N.C. – Bryce Evans' RBI-double in the fifth inning, coupled with a solid relief appearance on the mound by Michael Maiocco, helped Flagler College salvage the rubber game of the three-game series at the University of North Carolina Pembroke 8-6 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Sunday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.

Flagler raised its record to 8-9 overall and 3-6 in the Peach Belt. UNC Pembroke dropped to 12-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

Dylan Jones staked the Saints to an early lead after his two-run single in the first inning.

Flagler added an unearned run in the second and then Nick Oberg blasted a three-run homer to left field to give Flagler a 6-1 lead in the middle of the third.

The Braves got two runs back in the bottom of the third, but the Saints countered in the fifth with Evans' RBI-double and Kolin McMillen followed with a base hit up the middle to score Evans and Flagler held an 8-3 lead.

McMillen's single chased UNCP starter Logan Cook (2-2) from the game after tossing 4.2 innings and allowing 10 hits and seven earned runs.

The Braves scratched a run in the sixth and then got a two-run single from Stibel Aleman Saba in the ninth, but that's all UNC Pembroke could score off of Flagler relievers.

Maiocco (2-1) came on in relief of starter Luke Cooksey who tossed four innings, allowed six hits and three runs. After allowing a lead-off single to Justin Dattilo on the fifth, Maiocco went on to strike out the side. Earlier this week, he came one strike out shy of tying the school record with 15 at Albany State University. He fanned four in two innings of work today. Graf tossed the last three innings, allowed two hits, two runs, walked two and struck out four to earn his third save of the season.

Jones collected three singles, scored a run and had three runs batted in. Oberg went 2-for-5 with a double and the home run, three RBI and two runs scored. McMillen singled twice, knocked in two runs and scored another. Evans finished with two doubles, one RBI and he scored a run. Cole Ondrejka singled twice and scored a run.

Dattilo led the Braves going 4-for-5 with a double and three runs scored. Aleman Saba singled twice, drove in three runs and scored a run. Christian Snider singled twice and drove in a run.

Flagler, in the middle of a 10-game road trip, will visit Young Harris College for a three-game weekend series. The series starts on Friday (March 11) at 6 p.m.
