YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – A run-scoring double by Brett Westmoreland in the bottom of the eighth pushed Young Harris College to a 5-4 win over Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.
Young Harris improved to 7-12 overall and 2-8 in the Peach Belt. Flagler fell to 8-10 overall and 3-7 in conference play.
James Jean got the Saints on the board first with a three-run shot to left-center in the fourth inning.
The Mountain Lions got a run back in the bottom of the fourth and tied it with two runs in the fifth.
The Saints regained the lead, 4-3, in the sixth inning on a solo home run by
Igor Baez.
But the lead was short-lived as Nick Sexton belted a home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth.
In the bottom of the eighth, Zach Wall led off with a single through the left side of the infield and took second on a sacrifice bunt. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and trotted home on Westmoreland's double down the left field line.
Flagler's
Nick Oberg hit a one-out single in the ninth, but was wiped out on a game-ending double play.
Cody Beck (2-0) earned the win in relief for Young Harris. He tossed two scoreless innings, allowed two hits, walked one and fanned two. Jackson Winskie started and tossed six innings.
Sexton led the Mountain Lions with a pair of solo home runs. Zach Odom went 2-for-4 with a double and had two runs batted in. Westmoreland went 2-for-3 with the double, a run scored and one RBI.
Jeremy Graf (1-1) took the loss in relief for the Saints. He tossed 1.2 innings, allowed three hits and one run.
Mike O'Reilly started and pitched 6.1 innings and he surrendered seven hits and four runs. O'Reilly struck out eight batters.
Baez finished with half of Flagler's hits going 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored.
Both teams will meet tomorrow (March 12) in a noon doubleheader. The game time was moved up due to impending weather.
