How sweep it is! Saints sweep series from No. 17 Cougars

ST. AUGUSTINE – Kolin McMillen's solo home run in the third inning coupled with another solid performance on the mound by the Flagler College pitching staff was enough to post a 5-1 win over No. 17 (Collegiate Baseball Division II Top 30) Columbus State University in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field.

Flagler swept the three-game series and extended its winning streak to 10 games. The Saints raised their overall record to 18-11 and 7-8 in the Peach Belt. The Cougars fell to 22-10 overall and 9-6 in conference play.

Flagler scored one run in the second, third, fourth, sixth and eighth innings.

Igor Baez hit a lead-off double in the second inning, and then came around to score on a ground out by Jake Hathaway to give the Saints an early 1-0 lead.

After McMillen's solo home run in the third, Hathaway hit a sacrifice fly to right-center in the fourth to give Flagler a 3-0 lead.

Frankie Sagarese hit a run-scoring single in the sixth and Flagler added another in the eighth for insurance.

But Flagler starter Dustin Dye (4-3) didn't need to much help from the offense as he tossed six-plus scoreless innings, allowed three hits, walked four and fanned four to earn the win. Kyle Schackne tossed the final three innings, allowed two hits, one run and fanned three to earn his third save of the year.

Baez went 2-for-4 with a double and he scored two runs for the Saints. Hathaway collected two runs batted in.

Brandon Koehler (6-1) took the loss on the hill for the Cougars. He tossed six innings, surrendered seven hits and three earned runs. He walked three and fanned two.

Five different Cougars hit a single. Jackson Oliver hit an RBI single in the eighth inning.

Flagler hosts Augusta University for a three-game series next weekend. The series starts on Friday (April 1) at 6 p.m.
