Jaguars rally past Saints, 7-5

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Augusta University scored three unearned runs in the seventh inning to complete its rally for a 7-5 win over Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday night at Drysdale Field.

Augusta improved to 21-11 overall and 12-5 in the Peach Belt. The Jaguars are 8-1 in their last nine games. Flagler had its 10-game winning streak snapped and fell to 18-12 overall and 7-9 in conference play.

Flagler wasted little time in jumping on Augusta starter Tristan Jones (6-2). The Saints posted four runs in the first inning as Nick Oberg hit a two-run double and then the next batter, Jake Hathaway, drove Oberg home with a triple to right-center.

In the second inning, Dylan Jones got on with a bunt single to lead off the inning and then took third on an infield single by Kolin McMillen. Jones scored on a sacrifice fly to give the Saints a 5-0 lead. That would be all Flagler could muster for the rest of the game.

The Jaguars got three runs in the third on a three-run blast by Drew Taylor.

They drew to within one run by scoring a run in the fifth.

But in the sixth, the Jaguars took advantage of a pair of Flagler miscues. With one out, Jamal Cummings hit a sharp grounder to Oberg at shortstop, but he had a hard time getting the ball out of his glove and was late on the throw to first base. Two batters later, Clint Hardy drew a walk to put runners at first and second base. That walk was the end of the road for Flagler starter Mike O'Reilly (5-3). Hunter Boose belted a 1-1 pitch from reliever Kyle Schackne to deep left-center to score both runs with two outs. Then, Schackne tried to pick Boose off second base, but the throw went into center field and Boose came all the way around to score.

The Saints had runners at the corners with one out in the eighth, but the Jaguars got out of it when Hathaway hit a hard grounder just to the left side of the bag at second where shortstop Tyler Roberts made a great play to scoop, tag second and fire on to first to complete the double play.

Jones picked up the win after tossing 6.1 innings and scattering seven hits. He allowed five earned runs, walked three and struck out three. He retired 12-of-14 batters after the second inning. Frank Warren closed the final 2.2 innings to pick up his third save of the season. He allowed two hits and walked a batter.

Boose led the offense going 3-for-4 with a double, three runs batted in and he scored two runs. Connor Gilbert went 2-for-4 with a double. Cummings scored a pair of runs.

O'Reilly took the loss on the hill for the Saints. He pitched 6.2 innings and surrendered six hits and four earned runs. He walked three and fanned six. Schackne allowed one unearned run in his 2.1 innings pitched.

Jones collected two singles while Igor Baez had two singles of his own. Baez also scored a run.

The same two teams meet tomorrow at 3 p.m. on "Red" Cox Day at Drysdale Field.

Tonight's game was delayed one-hour and 19-minutes due to rain and lightning.
