Flagler drops two extra-inning games to No. 12 North Georgia

ST. AUGUSTINE – The Flagler College Saints (17-16, 2-8) dropped two tightly contested games to the No.12 (National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll) University of North Georgia Nighthawks (26-5, 4-0) Monday afternoon. Both games of the doubleheader went into extra innings as North Georgia took game one 2-0 in 12 innings and game two 4-1 in nine innings.
 
Flagler starter Haleigh Corbally and North Georgia starter Courtney Poole were locked into a pitcher's duel in during game one. Both pitchers held their opponent scoreless through the first 11 innings.
 
The Nighthawks broke the scoreless tie in the 12th inning when Brittani Crawford belted her third homer of the season good for two runs as Jessica Finch scored on the play.
 
Corbally suffered the loss falling to 7-6, but she allowed just two runs over 12 innings of work. Poole improved to 24-1 on the year tossing 12 scoreless frames. Flagler out-hit North Georgia 11-8 during the contest but left 16 runners on base.
 
Whitney Woodard collected three hits for the Saints from the leadoff spot in the batting order and Mallory Allen tallied three hits as well.
 
The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead in first inning of the second game. Woodard led off the game with a single and later scored on a single by Mackenzie Conley. The Nighthawks answered with the tying run in the fourth. Jessica Finch drove Stephanie Hartness in on a sacrifice fly to center.
 
In the top of the ninth, it was the long ball again to put North Georgia in front in extras. Katie Block sent a shot over the right field wall with two runners on giving the Nighthawks a 4-1 edge.
 
Callie Reed (7-5) was handed the loss in the second game, but went nine innings striking out eight hitters. She allowed four runs. Poole improved to 25-1 after picking up the win surrendering one run over nine innings. She also struck out eight.
 
Flagler heads on the road to Augusta, Georgia to face the Augusta University Jaguars on Saturday (March 19) in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. The Saints will return to Flagler Field on March 25 to welcome Lander University to St. Augustine for a doubleheader.
