GULF SHORES, Ala. –The Flagler College softball team split a pair of game on Sunday at the Gulf Shores Invitational at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. The No. 18 (NFCA Division II Top 25) University of Alabama-Huntsville defeated Flagler 3-1 in the first game and then the Saints routed Tuskegee University, 12-1, in six innings.
Flagler is now 4-7 overall this season.
Whitney Woodard hit a solo home run in the third inning to give Flagler a 2-0 lead. The Saints went on to score two more unearned runs in the inning before erupting for seven more in the sixth to invoke the mercy rule.
Keeley Murray hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning and
Hannah Hudson hit a two-run double.
Callie Reed (4-2) tossed five innings, scattered six hits, allowed one run and fanned six.
Tinsley Smith retired all three batters she faced in the bottom of the sixth.
Tori Volz led the 15-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in, two runs scored and a stolen base. Hudson singled, doubled, drove in three runs and scored another.
Malloree Escue collected two singles, scored two runs and knocked in two more. Murray went 2-for-4 with the home run.
Kaylin Finch (0-1) took the loss in the circle for the Lady Golden Tigers.
Adrienne Eady hit a double.
In the first game of the day, Alabama-Huntsville took advantage of a pair of passed balls to pick up single runs in the second and fifth innings. In the sixth, the Chargers had runners at first and second with one out and Jade Hays pulled off a squeeze bunt to score pinch runner Kelly Campbell from third base to give Alabama-Huntsville a 3-0 lead.
The Saints would get one run back in the bottom of the sixth as
Garland Evans reached on an error by the Charger second baseman and scored on Murray's double down the left field line.
Tyler Harrison (4-2) pitched four innings in relief to earn the win. She allowed just two hits and one unearned run while fanning five batters.
Sarah Jordan singled twice for Alabama-Huntsville.
Haleigh Corbally (0-4) tossed five innings and surrendered only three hits, two unearned runs and retired eight batters on fly outs.
Murray went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Volz collected a pair of singles.
Flagler hosts Rollins College on Friday (Feb. 12) at 6 p.m. in its home opener at Flagler Field.
