GULF SHORES, Ala. – Flagler College (3-6) dropped both contests today by one-run margins during the second day of the Gulf Shores Invitational. Flagler was defeated in the early game by the University of West Alabama (1-1) by a 5-4 final.
The Saints put up three runs in the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie, benefiting by three errors in the frame.
Mallory Allen picked up the only RBI of the inning with a groundout to third base.
Whitney Woodard added an RBI double the next inning extending to Saints' advantage to 4-0, but West Alabama came back with four in the home half. Ashley Stassin had a three-run homer in the inning.
Libby Davis provided the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh when she hit a home run to give West Alabama the victory.
Andrea Edmonds (1-0) earned the win for West Alabama after holding the Saints scoreless over an inning and two-thirds, allowing just one hit.
Haleigh Corbally (0-3) suffered the loss for Flagler allowing three earned runs over six and one-third innings. She also struck out seven hitters and did not walk anyone.
The University of West Florida jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning of Flagler's second game. Rachel White knocked the first run of the contest in on a sacrifice fly. West Florida then benefited from a couple of errors and a fielder's choice to plate three more runs.
The Saints came back in the top of the sixth, closing to deficit to 4-3.
Hannah Hudson sent
Malloree Escue home via a double for Flagler's first run.
Mackenzie Conley then followed with a two-run homer.
The pair of teams traded two-run seventh innings. The Saints took a two-run advantage in the top half when
Mallory Allen collected her second double of the game driving in a pair of runs. But, West Florida came back to walk-off with a win. Rhiannon Sassman drove in the tying run on a single and Jessica Wilkinson followed with a game-winning single.
Sarah Maloney (1-0) earned the win for West Florida allowing five runs over seven innings.
Callie Reed (3-2) suffered the loss for the Saints. She went six and one-third innings allowing four earned runs.
Flagler will wrap up the Gulf Shores Invitational tomorrow, Sunday (Feb. 7) with two contests. The team will play University of Alabama, Huntsville at 11:15 a.m. before facing Tuskegee University at 1:30 p.m.
