Tinsley Smith stars in the circle for the Saints

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Tinsley Smith earned a win in relief in the first game and recorded a save in the second game to help Flagler College sweep a non-conference doubleheader from Barry University, 9-3 and 6-3, Sunday afternoon at Buccaneer Field.

Flagler has won four-of-its-last-five games and improved to 7-8. Barry has lost four in a row and dropped to 3-5.

In the opener, the Saints scored a pair of unearned runs in the first and Whitney Woodard's two-run home run in the second provided enough insurance.

Maddy Murphy hit a two-run double in the fourth and Malloree Escue belted a two-run home run in the sixth.

Smith (1-0) tossed 4.1 scoreless innings in relief to pick up her first win of the season. She scattered four hits, walked a batter and struck out one.

Woodard went 1-for-1 with the home run and she scored three runs. Escue went 1-for-3 with the home run and she scored two runs. .Keeley Murray hit a two-run single in the first inning.

Anieliese Palmeiro (1-2) took the loss for the Buccaneers as she tossed five-plus innings, allowed six hits and five earned runs to go along with three walks.

Cheyanne Head went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles.

The Buccaneers stranded 10 runners on base.

In the second game, Flagler used a three-run third inning to take a commanding 4-1 lead. Escue broke open a 1-all tie with an RBI single to left and later scored the third run of the inning on a single to center by Murphy.

Mallory Allen hit a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth to give Flagler a 5-2 lead and Murray had an RBI single in the seventh.

Haleigh Corbally (2-4) pitched five innings, scattered five hits, allowed one earned run, walked one and struck out three. Smith closed the game to earn her third save. She surrendered four hits and one run.

Tori Volz collected two singles, scored twice and drove in a run. Escue singled twice, scored a run and knocked in another while Allen went 2-for-3 with the home run. Hannah Hudson singled twice.   

Kristina Pazienza (0-1) went the distance for Barry and allowed 12 hits and three earned runs.

Kayla Ogle singled twice and scored two runs while Sam Busekrus collected two singles and knocked in a run.

Flagler hosts a tournament this weekend (Feb. 20-21) at Flagler Field. The Saints open the tournament against Newberry College at 10 a.m. and then will take on Tuskegee University at noon.
