Flagler homers four times in Saturday sweep

ST. AUGUSTINE – The Flagler College softball team (9-8) socked four home runs which helped them to a pair of wins at the Flagler Invitational Saturday afternoon at Flagler Field. The Saints defeated Newberry College (8-4) 7-3 in the opener and then rallied past Tuskegee University (0-13), 7-4.
 
Flagler jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning against Newberry behind a three-run homer by Malloree Escue, her fourth of the season.
 
The Saints tacked on four insurance runs in the sixth as Mallory Allen belted her second home run of the season, a three-run shot, in the frame.
 
The Newberry Wolves cut the deficit to 7-4 during its final frame. Myranda Dills hit a three-run homer for her first of the year.
 
Callie Reed earned the win for Flagler improving to 5-3. Reed did not allow a run through her first six innings of work. She allowed two runs in the seventh before Tinsley Smith entered and closed out the game. Smith allowed one run.
 
Maude McCourry (4-2) suffered the loss for Newberry allowing seven runs over 5.1 innings.
 
In the following game, Flagler took a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning when Tuskegee came back to take a 3-2 advantage on a three-run homer by Kaylin Finch.
 
The Saints bounced right back in the home half to score three times. Mackenzie Conley hit a two-run home run during a three-run fourth and added a two-run shot in the fifth.
 
Haleigh Corbally (3-4) was credited with the win for Flagler and Tori Garner (0-4) was tagged with the loss allowing seven runs during her six-inning performance. Corbally surrendered four runs over 4.1 innings and struck out six hitters. Katelynn Smith fired 2.2 hitless inning in relief of Corbally. Smith walked one hitter and struck out five.
 
The Saints will close out the Flagler Invitational tomorrow (Feb. 21) with a contest against Newberry at 2:30 p.m. followed by a matchup with Eckerd College at 4:30 p.m.
