GREENWOOD, S.C. – John Mangum's three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning helped No. 32 (
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Preseason Poll) Lander University defeat No. 37 Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday afternoon at Dolny Stadium.
Lander improved to 5-2 on the season while Flagler dropped to 1-2. It was the conference opener for both teams.
The Bearcats did the majority of their damage in the sixth inning. Flagler starter
Mike O'Reilly (1-1) retired the first two batters, but Colby Lusignan singled to right and the next batter, Thomas Berry, drew a walk to set things up for Mangum. His three-run blast gave Lander a 5-1 lead.
Flagler got two runs back in the top of the seventh.
Frankie Sagarese ripped a two-run single to left, plating
Kolin McMillen and
Dylan Jones.
Trailing 6-3 in the top of the seventh,
Igor Baez and
James Jean reached on back-to-back singles, but Brandon White came in to shut the door in the last inning and two-thirds to earn his third save of the season.
Will Jones tossed six innings and scattered six hits, allowed one run and fanned three.
Lusignan went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in the first inning.
O'Reilly also tossed six innings and only allowed three hits, but four earned runs came across. He walked two and struck out six.
Sagarese went 2-for-5 with a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning to go along with his two-run single. McMillen and Jones each singled twice and scored a run.
Lorenzo Butler and Jean both singled twice.
The same two teams meet tomorrow (Feb. 13) at 1 p.m.
