Bearcats use four-run first inning to defeat Saints, 6-1

GREENWOOD, S.C. – John Mangum belted a three-run home run in  No. 32 (Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Top 25) Lander University's four-run first inning which helped led the team to a 6-1 win over No. 37 Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Saturday afternoon at Dolny Stadium.

Lander improved to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the Peach Belt. Flagler fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

The first inning started off innocent enough as Matt White drew a walk and then Zach Daly singled to center field. Two batters later, Thomas Berry hit a single to right field which scored White from second base. Mangum followed with a blast to left field to give the Bearcats a 4-0 lead.

The Saints scored their only run of the game when Igor Baez drew a bases loaded walk.

The Bearcats added two more runs in the seventh for insurance.

Colton Rogers (1-1) tossed seven innings, scattered six hits, allowed one run, struck out four, but walked four. Andrew Reardon finished the last two innings allowing only two hits with one walk.

Berry collected three singles, scored a run and drove in another. Daly singled twice and scored a run.

Michael Maiocco (0-1) took the loss for Flagler. He pitched two innings, allowed four hits and four runs with two walks and two strikeouts. Kyle Schackne pitched four innings of scoreless relief. He allowed two hits and struck out a career-high seven batters.

Lorenzo Butler went 3-for-5 with a double. Kolin McMillen singled twice.

Flagler will try and salvage the rubber game tomorrow (Feb. 14) at noon.
