ST. AUGUSTINE –
Chris Williams recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds in Flagler College's 66-59 overtime win over Clark Atlanta University in a non-conference men's basketball game Saturday evening at Flagler Gymnasium.
Flagler won its fourth game in a row to improve to 4-1 while Clark Atlanta fell to 4-4.
While both teams struggled shooting from the field (Flagler 37.9% and Clark Atlanta 29.3%), it came down to hot shooting by the Saints in the overtime period. Flagler shot 57.1% from the floor in the extra session and held Clark Atlanta to 12.5% shooting.
Flagler trailed for almost the entire second half and were behind by as many as six. The Saints took their first lead (53-51) since the 11:08 mark in the first half when
Vaughn McCall sank a pair of free throws with 1:36 to go in regulation. However, a Tim Sanders layup with 1:08 left proved to be the basket that forced overtime.
The Saints missed a fall away jumper with 49 seconds left and then Sanders missed a 3-pointer for the Panthers with 27 ticks left.
Cortlin Davis' driving layup went off the rim and Williams' put back at the buzzer was off.
The Saints took a quick 55-53 lead when Davis cut through the lane and made a layup 16 seconds into the overtime period. About a minute and a half later Flagler's transition game kicked in as an outlet pass by Davis, off of a missed layup by the Panthers, found a streaking Williams just over the midcourt line and he threw down a one-handed dunk to extend the lead to four.
With 50 seconds left to go, Sanders sank a 3-pointer to get Clark Atlanta to within a basket (61-59). But that would be the last points the Panthers would score, and their only field goal in overtime. Flagler iced it with making half of three two-shot free throws and a Williams layup.
McCall added 17 points and seven rebounds while
Jeffercy Jean recorded his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Davis chipped in with 13 points and five rebounds.
The Saints committed a season-high 20 turnovers but the Panthers were only able to score 16 points in exchange. Flagler blocked eight shots and was led by Williams' three rejections.
Sanders led Clark Atlanta, a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, tallied 21 points, seven rebounds and had six steals. Tajai Johnson added 11 points coming off of the bench while Chuka Eneh grabbed 10 rebounds to go along with nine points. Damien Davis also grabbed 10 boards.
Clark Atlanta out-rebounded Flagler 49-45 and had 18 offensive rebounds which led to 18 second chance points.
Flagler will take a week off for final exams and returns to the court on Dec. 14 against the University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras at 3 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
