McCall’s 25 leads Saints past Gallitos

ST. AUGUSTINE – Vaughn McCall scored a season-high 25 points to help Flagler College hold off a pesky University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras team 89-82 Wednesday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.
 
Flagler extended its winning streak to five games and improved to 5-1. P.R.-Rio Piedras fell to 2-3.

The Saints used a 15-5 run to wipe out a 67-66 Gallitos lead with under six minutes left in regulation. Jeffery Jean started the spurt, which lasted 2:49, with a pair of free throws and McCall capped it with a pair of free throws with 2:59 left to go in the game and gave Flagler an 81-72 lead.

McCall made 8 of his 14 shots from the field which included 3 of 6 from 3-point range and an additional 6 for 6 at the free throw line. Cortlin Davis added 16 points and six rebounds while Chris Williams recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds. He scored eight points and grabbed nine rebounds in the second half alone, despite playing the majority of the half with three fouls. Jean added 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Ben Bobbitt, in his first game of the season, tacked on eight points and five assists.

Flagler shot 52.4% (33-63) from the field and shot at a 58.3% (14-24) clip in the second half. The Saints dominated the paint out-scoring the Gallitos 52-22.

Krystian Medina poured in a game-high 31 points for Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras. He made 11 of 15 from the field and knocked down seven of the team's 15 3-pointers. Omar Font added 20 points while Josue Erazo grabbed 12 rebounds.
 
The Gallitos were limited to 38.5% (15-39) shooting from the field in the second half.

Flagler opens Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday against Columbus State University at 3:30 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
