Saints advance to semis with a sweep

AIKEN, S.C. – No. 3 seed Flagler College used a balanced scoring attack to sweep the No. 6 seed Lander University (25-12, 25-19, 25-18) in the first quarterfinal match of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional at the Convocation Center.

Flagler extended its winning streak to 13 matches and improved to 24-6 overall. The Saints will face the winner of the Wingate University-Queens University of Charlotte match in the first semifinal tomorrow (Dec. 3) at 5:30 p.m. Lander ends its season at 21-12.

Sara Davis recorded a team-high 11 kills and hit an efficient .321 with two errors on 28 swings to pace the Saints attack. Taja Valmyr recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs. She hit .333 on the day with 30 errorless swings. Megan Hooks and Ashley Cheewah added eight and seven kills, respectively. Tara Savisky notched her team-leading 15th double-double with 35 assists and 16 digs. Rachel Porada collected 14 digs.

Khiani Kelly led the Bearcats with a match-high 15 kills. Hannah McManus collected a match-high 31 digs while Emily Reed tallied 14 assists. Katie Haake recorded a double-double with 12 assists and 10 digs.

The Saints rolled in the first set as they hit .300 and held the Bearcats to a -.057 percentage. Flagler used a 9-2 run to blow open a 12-7 advantage.

The second set was a lot closer, but the Saints rattled off the last three points to take the set, 25-19. Two of those three points were earned by Bearcat miscues. Both Davis and Valmyr had four kills for the Saints.

The third set saw seven ties and three lead changes. Flagler used a 3-0 spurt to break open a tie (13-all) which forced a Lander timeout. The Bearcats closed to 16-15 but could not get any closer. The Saints closed the set, and the match, on a 7-1 run. Again, Lander was victimized by three errors, all on the attack.
