Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Flagler season comes to an end with tough five-set loss

AIKEN, S.C. – Meredith Jones showed why she was the South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year as she racked up 18 kills, including six in the deciding set alone, to lead No. 7 seed Queens University of Charlotte to a 3-2 (22-25, 25-23, 25-22, 18-25, 15-13) win over No. 3 seed Flagler College in a NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Volleyball semifinal match Saturday evening at the Convocation Center.

Queens raised its record to 22-9 overall and will advance to Sunday's final against the winner of the Armstrong State University-USC Aiken match. The winner of the regional final will advance to the NCAA Division II National Championships Dec. 8-10 at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Flagler had its 13-match winning streak end as the Saints finish the season with a 24-7 record.

Flagler was able to win the fourth set 25-18 as Queens had difficulty offensively. The Royals were limited to a -.030 hitting percentage.

The fifth set saw five ties but just one lead change. Queens jumped out to an early 4-2 lead, and after a Rebecca Corcoran kill, took an 8-6 lead as the teams exchanged sides. Flagler tied it at 10 after a kill by Sara Davis and then Tara Savisky found an open side of the court to place the ball. But Jones would blast a kill to give the Royals an 11-10 lead, a lead they would not relinquish. A kill by Davis cut the deficit to 13-12 but another Jones kill gave Queens match point. Flagler fought off the first match point after a double-block by Davis and Megan Hooks. However, Jones ended the match with a touch over the net, just out of the reach of Hooks. Jones hit .417 in that set with six kills and on error on 12 swings. Prior to that set, she was contained by Flagler.

Jessica Raines added 10 kills for the Royals. Sydney Kunz recorded a double-double with 49 assists and 17 digs. Megan Mancini collected a team-high 26 digs. The Royals scooped up a total of 108 digs. Alex Thompson recorded four total blocks. Corcoran added four aces to go along with 16 digs.

Davis recorded a match-high 19 kills and had four aces as well as three block assists for the Saints. She recorded five of her kills in the fifth set. Davis finished the match with a .306 hitting percentage. Ashley Cheewah added 15 kills and tied her season-high with seven total blocks. Taja Valmyr notched her 10th double-double with 11 kills and 23 digs. Tara Savisky recorded her 16th double-double with a match-high 52 assists and 14 digs. Kayla Norelli gathered a match-high 33 digs to finish the year with 612 digs which is the fourth-highest in the program's history.

Flagler has six seniors departing the program: Genel Sturgeon, Megan Hooks, Rachel Bryant, Jenea Reddick, Ashley Cheewah and Amber Peone. They were a part of a Flagler program that has made seven NCAA Division II Southeast Regional appearances in the last eight years.
