ST. AUGUSTINE –
Cortlin Davis recorded his second double-double of the season with 25 points and 12 rebounds to help Flagler College knock No. 25 (NABC Division II Top 25) Columbus State University from the ranks of the unbeaten 97-82 in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball mutual opener Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.
Flagler extended its winning streak to six games and improved to 6-1 this season. The win was Flagler's first over a nationally ranked program since defeating Augusta University in overtime on Jan. 5, 2011 at Flagler Gym. This was Flagler's first conference-opening win since Dec. 4, 2010 against USC Aiken, also at Flagler Gym. Columbus State fell to 6-1.
Davis erupted in the second half as he scored 19 of his 25 points in the final half.
Vaughn McCall added 20 points with the help of four 3-pointers. He added seven assists.
Ben Bobbitt, in just his second game back, poured in 18 points and dished out seven assists.
Kessler Bell and
Austin Howard each tacked on 14 points.
For the second game in a row, the Saints shot better than 50% from the field as they finished with a 51.7% (30-58) mark. Flagler made a season-high 50% (12-24) of its 3-point field goal attempts.
Darius Joell scored 25 of his game-high 31 points in the second half for the Cougars. Arben Camaj added 19 points and seven rebounds while Marcus Dixon recorded a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. JaCori Payne added 10 points.
The Saints built a 13-point lead in the first half and took a 48-38 lead into halftime.
The Cougars opened the second half on a 16-5 run and took a 54-53 lead after Camaj sank a 3-pointer with 14:35 left in the game.
Flagler answered with its own 29-6 run over the next 9:21 to put the game away. Davis was responsible for 12 points in that run alone.
Flagler plays its first road game of the season on Monday (Dec. 19) when it visits Georgia College in a 3:30 p.m. tip.
