ST. AUGUSTINE –
Austin Howard scored a career-high 22 points as Flagler College survived a scare from a scrappy University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez team 77-73 in a non-conference men's basketball game Tuesday night at Flagler Gymnasium.
Flagler evened its record at 1-1 while Puerto Rico-Mayaguez fell to 0-3.
With 46 second left, the Tarzans had a chance to tie the game on an old fashioned three-point play. Alexander Curet drove the lane and made a layup and was fouled by Flagler's
Kessler Bell. He missed the free throw and
Chris Williams got the rebound for the Saints.
Cortlin Davis was fouled with 19 seconds left and he made the first of two free throws to give Flagler a 75-73 lead. Luis Lopez was fouled with two seconds left but missed both free throw attempts. On the second miss, Flagler's
Jeffercy Jean was fouled away from the rebound and he casually stepped to the line and sank both free throws to preserve the lead (77-73).
Jean finished the game with a double-double as he tied his career-high in points with 15 and added a career-high 13 rebounds. Jean also had four assists and three steals. Davis chipped in with 15 points, six rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
Vaughn McCall contributed 13 points and five assists while Williams finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Flagler held its largest lead (25-11) with 9:27 left in the first half, but UPR-Mayaguez answered with an 18-8 run to get back into the game and only trail 39-31 at the half.
Lopez scored 14 of his team-high 20 points in the first half, coming off of the bench. He sank four 3-pointers and had three steals in just 18 minutes of work. Ramon Calderon and Curet each scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Curet added five assists. Alexis Parrilla was limited to 10 points.
The Tarzans made 51.5% (17-33) of their shots in the second half while the Saints were held to 36% (9-25). Mayaguez out-scored Flagler in the paint, 42-24.
Flagler will break for Thanksgiving and return to the court on Nov. 28 against former Florida Sun Conference rival Webber International University at 7 p.m.
