Flagler clinches a share of the PBC regular season title

ST. AUGUSTINE – Megan Hooks recorded 12 of her match-high 18 kills in the last two sets to help Flagler College holds off a stubborn Augusta University team for a 3-1 (17-25, 25-22, 26-24, 25-22) victory in a Peach Belt Conference regular season finale for both teams Sunday night at Flagler Gymnasium.

Flagler won its ninth match in a row and improved to 20-6 overall and 16-2 in the Peach Belt. The Saints clinched a share of the PBC regular season crown with the victory as they tied the University of South Carolina Aiken for first place. Flagler will be the No. 1 seed in this upcoming weekend's conference tournament at Milledgeville, Georgia. The Saints win the third tiebreaker against the Pacers which is the total number of sets won in head-to-head competition. Flagler won 3-1 in St. Augustine while USC Aiken won 3-2 at Aiken for the final tally of 5-4 in favor of Flagler.

This is Flagler's fourth PBC title in volleyball, outright or shared. The Saints won the crown in 2009 and 2010. They shared the title in 2011 with Armstrong State University.

Augusta finished the regular season with a 17-15 overall record and an 8-10 conference mark. The Jaguars will have to wait for the result of Monday's Georgia College-Armstrong State match to figure out what see it will be. If the Bobcats lose Augusta will be the No. 6 seed. If the Bobcats win the Jaguars slip to the No. 7 seed.

Hooks finished the match with a .333 hitting percentage as she had only two errors on 48 swings. She also had two total blocks. Taja Valmyr recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 15 digs. Sara Davis added 10 kills and five total blocks. Tara Savisky logged her team-leading 13th double-double of the season with 47 assists and 13 digs. Kayla Norelli collected a team-high 22 digs.

Jessica Hedrick led the Jaguars with 13 kills and a .400 hitting percentage. She had only three errors on 25 swings. Savanna Gonzales added 12 kills coming off of the bench while Blair Bolton chipped in with 10 kills. Payton Murchie tallied 28 assists while Cat DeSilvester gathered a match-high 26 digs. Jordan Bickett and JaNhea Beisner each recorded three service aces.

The match consisted of 20 ties and 13 lead changes. The third set alone had 10 ties and seven lead changes.

In the third set, the Saints held a 19-13 lead only to see the Jaguars chip away at the deficit and tied the set at 23-all after a kill by Hedrick. Augusta took a lead on the next rally after a Jenea Reddick hitting error. Following a Flagler timeout, the Saints tied the set at 24 after a Valmyr kill and then a hitting error by Hedrick gave the Saints set point. A Valmyr kill gave the set to the Saints, 26-24.

In the fourth set, Flagler built a 19-12 lead and then held off Augusta the rest of the way to win 25-22.

Next up for the Saints will be the No. 8 seed, Columbus State University, in a PBC Tournament quarterfinal match on Friday (Nov. 18). The time of the match is to be determined on Monday. Flagler swept the season series winning 3-2 at Columbus State and then sweeping the Lady Cougars in St. Augustine.
