Davis, Cheewah and Hooks lead Saints Friday night

ST. AUGUSTINE – Sara Davis, Ashley Cheewah and Megan Hooks recorded 41 of Flagler College's 61 kills to help lead the Saints in a 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23) victory over Francis Marion University in a Peach Belt Conference volleyball match Friday night at Flagler Gymnasium.

Flagler extended its winning streak to seven matches and improved to 18-6 overall and 14-2 in the Peach Belt. The 14 conference wins by Flagler are the most since joining the league in 2009. Francis Marion had its four-match winning streak snapped and it dropped to 15-11 overall and 9-8 in conference play.

Davis recorded a match-high 16 kills and hit an efficient .414 with four errors on 29 swings. Six of Davis' kills came in the third set where she hit a red-hot .625 with one error on eight swings. Cheewah tied her career-high with 15 kills and hit a career-best .636 for the match. She only had one error on 22 swings and added three solo blocks to her line. Hooks added 10 kills. Jenea Reddick chipped in with nine kills and had five total blocks. Tara Savisky tallied a season-high 58 assists and added eight digs. Kayla Norelli collected a match-high 17 digs. Taja Valmyr gathered 12 digs and had three service aces.

The 60 assists registered by the Saints tied for the most this season and the 11 total team blocks was the second-highest this year. The 61 kills were the most recorded by the team in a four-set match.

Georgia Garrison led the Patriots with a double-double of 15 kills and 13 digs. Caroline Boone, Lenee' Blot and Erika Hartings each added 11 kills. Both Boone and Blot had four total blocks. Kaitlyn Ziegelmaier tallied 43 assists.

The match featured 25 ties and 10 lead changes. The second set alone featured 12 ties and five lead changes.

Both teams played well in the fourth set as each hit over .300. After a block by Boone knotted the score at 20, Reddick, who had the hitting error on the previous play, redeemed herself with a block of Hartings to give Flagler the lead for good, 21-20. After a Patriot timeout, Valmyr gave the Saints a cushion with a kill and Rachel Porada served an ace to give Flagler a commanding 23-20 advantage. The Saints had its first match point after a block by Valmyr. However, Francis Marion proved to be stubborn and fought off two match points to close the gap to 24-23. Davis finished the set with a spike into the middle of the Patriot defense to secure the match.

Prior to the match, Davis was honored after becoming the ninth Flagler player to surpass 1,000 kills. She did that on Nov. 4 at Georgia College.

Tomorrow is "Senior Day" as the University of North Carolina Pembroke visits Flagler Gym. The match will start at approximately 2 p.m. with festivities honoring the six seniors leading into the match. Also, for those attending tomorrow's and Sunday's matches, please bring a non-perishable food item (peanut butter and jelly plastic jars especially) to help benefit the local families from the R.B. Hunt and Ketterlinus Schools affected by last month's hurricane.
