Flagler sweeps Columbus State

ST. AUGUSTINE – A one-hour delay to the start of the match could not slow down Flagler College in a 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-18) sweep of Columbus State University in a Peach Belt Conference volleyball match Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.

Flagler improved to 14-6 overall and 10-2 in the Peach Belt. Columbus State fell to 14-9 overall and 5-8 in conference play.

Columbus State had travel issues leaving Savannah, Georgia this morning. The charter bus the team took had mechanical problems so they had to find another bus. So the match was moved from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Megan Hooks finished with a match-high nine kills and hit a superb .304 with two errors on 23 swings. She had two aces and three block assists. Sara Davis and Ashley Cheewah each recorded seven kills. Cheewah hit .462 in the match. Tara Savisky tallied 28 assists and added eight digs while Kayla Norelli collected 11 digs. Genel Sturgeon finished with five kills, nine digs and two aces.

Mary McCarthy led the Lady Cougars with nine kills and four total blocks. Zoemy Barreto Pereira added eight kills and nine digs. Abby King tallied 23 assists while Caytlin Merritt corralled 17 digs.

Flagler plays host to arch-rival Armstrong State University on Wednesday (Nov. 2) at 7 p.m. at Flagler Gym. The two met this past Wednesday with Flagler rallying to win, 3-2.
