MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Flagler College men's cross country team won its first Peach Belt Conference Championship race this afternoon and did so by a comfortable 32 points Saturday morning at the Counsel Farm Cross Country Course.
This was the first outright conference title the men's program has won. In 1993 they were co-champions of the Florida Sun Conference.
The Saints were buoyed by four runners who finished in the top 15. All of which earned all-conference accolades.
Andrew Smith and
Kray Hubner finished sixth and seventh overall on the 8K course. Smith finished with a career-best time of 25:26.4 which earned him his second all-conference accolade. Hubner crushed his season-best time with a 25:33.6. His previous best time was 27:06.2.
Erik Hartley finished 11
th with a time of 25:41.6 to earn his second all-conference award. Finishing in 14
th place was
Crisman Jones who posted a season-best time of 25:52.6.
Brian Beil was voted the PBC's Coach of the Year and Hubner earned Freshman of the Year honors by being the top finisher among the participating freshman runners.
Flagler finished ahead of the University of Montevallo which tallied 88 points and had two finishers in the top 15. Augusta University and the defending conference champion, UNC Pembroke, finished in third and fourth places, respectively.
Timothy Asis of Young Harris College, the PBC Men's Cross Country Runner of the Year, led the 86-man field with a time of 24:42.6. It was the second year in a row a Young Harris runner won the individual title (Mathew Biwott). He edged Henning Schein of Armstrong State University who crossed the finish line at 24:52.8.
Sam Mack of Flagler finished in 18
th place with a time of 26:07.2
Trenton Liberty placed 29
th overall with a time of 26:33.9.
Up next for Flagler is the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Nov. 5 at Montevallo, Alabama.
