FLORENCE, S.C. – Flagler College shook off the rust of a 13-day respite, no thanks to Hurricane Matthew, to sweep the University of North Carolina Pembroke 25-18, 25-12 and 25-14 in a Peach Belt Conference match Friday night at the Smith University Center.
Flagler extended its winning streak to five and improved to 9-4 overall and 5-0 in the Peach Belt. UNC Pembroke fell to 2-18 overall and dropped to 0-9 in conference play.
Both schools were impacted by last weekend's hurricane. Both campuses were flooded and lost power for several days, but both are recovering rapidly. Tonight's match was to be played at Pembroke, but Francis Marion University, which also sustained damage from the same hurricane, was accommodating to serve as hosts for this match.
All 14 players for Flagler saw time on the court this evening.
Taja Valmyr led the Saints with nine kills and she hit .350 with just two errors on 20 swings. She also added six digs and two block assists.
Sara Davis added eight kills on 13 errorless swings to hit an efficient .615. She had four block assists as well.
Ashley Cheewah chipped in with seven kills.
Kayla Norelli collected a match-high 16 digs while
