FLORENCE, S.C. –
Sara Davis led a balanced scoring attack with 13 kills and she added five total blocks as Flagler College defeated Francis Marion University 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-22, 27-25) in a Peach Belt Conference volleyball match Saturday afternoon at the Smith University Center.
The Saints extended their winning streak to six matches and improved to 10-4 overall and remain perfect in the Peach Belt at 6-0. The Patriots lost their first home match of the season (7-1) and dropped to 11-7 overall and 5-4 in conference play. Francis Marion had won 10 matches in a row at home. Its last loss in Florence was to Flagler, 3-2, on Oct. 23, 2015.
In the fourth set, Flagler had match point (24-23), but a kill by Caroline Boone extended the match for Francis Marion.
Taja Valmyr put the Saints back on top, 25-24, with a kill, but an attack error by the Saints kept the match going. Finally, an attack error by Georgia Garrison gave the lead to Flagler, and Davis finished off the match with a solo block of Boone.
Davis had only one error on 29 swings as she finished with a .414 hitting percentage.
Ashley Cheewah added 10 kills, hit .412 and had three total blocks while Valmyr notched her second double-double of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs. Valmyr also had three service aces.
Megan Hooks chipped in with 10 kills and three total blocks.
Tara Savisky recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 39 assists and 12 digs. Savisky also had three aces.
Rachel Porada and
Kayla Norelli each collected 16 digs.
Flagler tied its season-high with nine aces this afternoon.
Boone led the Patriots with a match-high 15 kills while Carlie Smith and Erika Hartings each added 11 kills. Smith tacked on four total blocks. Garrison recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs. Carrie McGinnis tallied 47 assists while Natalie Vaughn collected a match-high 20 digs. Vaughn also had five aces.
Up next for Flagler will be a road contest against USC Aiken on Friday (Oct. 21) at 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
