ST. AUGUSTINE – Clayton State University used a 35-17 run which lasted 9-minutes and 36-seconds to rally past Flagler College 87-73 in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.
Clayton State improved to 9-6 overall and 4-4 in the Peach Belt. Flagler dipped to 6-10 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
The Saints went to the locker room with a 34-29 halftime lead as both teams shot 36.4% from the floor. Flagler made 33.3% (5-15) of its shots from 3-point range to provide the difference.
After a
Nick Grier dunk gave the Saints a 43-39 lead with 15:22 left to play, Alfonso Davis scored three baskets in a row, the latter gave Clayton State a 45-43 lead with 13:22 left and the Lakers would not trail again. Those buckets by Davis ignited the 35-17 run over the next 9:36. In the run, Clayton State made 86.7% (13-15) of its shots from the field while Flagler only made 31.6% (6-19).
The Lakers shot a blistering 75.9% (22-29) in the second half alone and finished the game shooting 54.8% (34-62).
Davis finished with a double-double with a couple of game-highs - 22 points and 15 rebounds. Davis also added four assists and five blocked shots to his line. Tajika Knight added 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Saiquan Terry contributed 15 points, with the help of four 3-pointers, and dished out five assists. SirDarius Henry tacked on 10 points in a reserve role.
Clayton State out-rebounded Flagler 42-34 and out-scored the Saints in the paint 50-30.
Matt Clark led the Saints with 18 points and he dished out four assists.
Jeffercy Jean came off the bench to score a season-best 15 points, grabbed six rebounds and tallied three assists.
Keith Gray added 14 points, eight rebounds and blocked two shots. Grier tacked on 11 points and corralled six rebounds.
Flagler will take on Georgia College (13-4 overall, 6-2 PBC) on Monday (Jan. 18) at Flagler Gymnasium at 3:30 p.m. on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
