ST. AUGUSTINE – The Flagler College volleyball team used a balanced scoring attack to win a pair of matches in its inaugural volleyball tournament on Saturday at Flagler Gym. The Saints swept Dominican College of New York 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-10) and Florida Tech 3-1 (25-21, 25-19, 23-25, 25-18) to go 3-0 in the two-day tournament.
Flagler improved to 3-1 on the season.
Megan Hooks led the Saints in kills on Saturday with 18, 14 of which came against Florida Tech.
Sara Davis added 17 kills, hit .395 and collected a team-high 10 blocks. She had 13 kills, a .379 hitting percentage and five total blocks in the nightcap against the Panthers of Florida Tech.
Jenea Reddick racked up 13 kills, 10 of those came in the Florida Tech match.
Shea Hamilton and
Taja Valmyr each collected 12 kills on the day. Hamilton hit a team-best .471 with only four errors on 17 swings.
In the opener, Hamilton led the Saints with 11 kills and she hit a sizzling .643 with only two errors on 14 swings. Valmyr added seven kills and hit .667.
Genel Sturgeon tacked on six kills and hit .714.
Rachel Bryant chipped in with five kills and hit .571.
Caitlyn Kovach led the defense with 10 digs while
Tara Savisky tallied 38 assists. Davis collected five total blocks.
Flagler hit .376 for the match with 46 kills and 14 errors on 85 swings.
Cortney Yeoman led the Lady Chargers with six kills. Amanda Hallstein added 15 assists and nine digs.
Against Florida Tech, the Saints hit an efficient .226 (48-18-133) and the defense supplied 62 digs and six total team blocks. On top of the three-pronged offensive attack formed by Hooks, Davis and Reddick, Peyton Pillsbury scooped up 17 digs and served up three aces. Kovach added 15 digs. Davis recorded another five total blocks while Savisky tallied 38 assists.
Alea Hamm led the Panthers with 13 kills and hit .312. Kim Juriga and Marilyn Dick added 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Ashtin Truesdale tallied 34 assists to go along with three aces. Becca Bower collected 15 digs.
Other scores from the final day of the tournament were: Anderson 3, Converse 0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-20); Florida Tech 3, Anderson 0 (25-7, 25-20, 25-17); and, Converse 3, Dominican 1 (25-18, 25-20, 16-25, 29-27).
Flagler hits the road for the first time next weekend, starting with a match at Erskine College on Friday (Sept. 11) at 6 p.m.
