Davis leads way with 19 kills but Saints fall in four

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College's Sara Davis recorded a season-high 19 kills, but it wasn't enough as Francis Marion University rallied to a 3-1 (14-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-22) win Saturday afternoon in a Peach Belt Conference match at Flagler Gymnasium.

Francis Marion improved to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in the Peach Belt. Flagler fell to 8-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Davis only had two errors on 29 swings to hit .586. She added four total blocks. Davis entered the weekend ranked No. 15 in Division II in hitting percentage (.417). Megan Hooks tied her career-high with 16 kills and hit .333. Tara Savisky recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 46 assists and 17 digs. Caitlyn Kovach led the defense with a match-high 23 digs.
 
The Saints hit .259 for the match with 53 kills and 18 errors on 135 swings. Flagler hit .433 in the first set with 15 kills and two errors on 30 swings.

Alexzandra Reed recorded a double-double with a team-high 14 kills and added 11 digs for the Patriots. Carlie Smith tacked on 13 kills and finished hitting .545 with one error on 22 swings. Samantha Hinrichs also recorded a double-double with 24 assists and 11 digs. Shelbi Meek paced the defense with 16 digs.

In the first set with the scored tied at 5-all, Davis and Shea Hamilton sandwiched a pair of kills around a hitting error by Francis Marion to pull ahead 8-5. The Saints cruised to a 25-14 win.

Flagler held a 19-14 lead in the second set until Francis Marion pulled even at 20-20 after a double-block by Kadeeja Griffin and Georgia Garrison. Reed the served up an ace and Smith added a kill to give the Patriots a 22-20 lead. Francis Marion took the set 25-22 to even the match.

The Patriots led for the majority of the third set, but the Saints rallied back to within a point (21-20) after a Davis kill. She added another kills a little later to get Flagler back to within a point (22-21) again. FMU would win again, 25-22.

Francis Marion opened the fourth set on a 9-3 roll, but Flagler rallied back to tie the match at 17 off of a kill by Davis, and then once again at 18. A kill by Davis brought the Saints to within one point (22-21), but the Patriots put the set away 25-22 to take the match.

Flagler will venture out on the road for the first time this season in conference play next weekend. The Saints will start the road trip at Georgia Regents University of Augusta on Friday (Oct. 2) at 7 p.m.
