Flagler throws a block party at Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Flagler College volleyball team turned in a solid defensive effort recording 12 total team blocks to help it power past Augusta University 3-2 (22-25, 19-25, 26-24, 25-19, 15-8) in a Peach Belt Conference volleyball match Friday night at Christenberry Fieldhouse.

Flagler improved to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in the Peach Belt. Augusta had its three-match winning streak snapped and fell to 10-4 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

Ashley Cheewah led the Flagler front line with a season-high six total blocks. Sara Davis and Rachel Bryant each added four more rejections. Davis paced the offensive attack with a match-high 17 kills and an efficient .438 hitting percentage as she had just three errors on 32 swings. Megan Hooks and Taja Valmyr each contributed 11 kills. Caitlyn Kovach collected a team-high 20 digs while Tara Savisky tallied 44 assists.

The 12 team blocks ties the team-high from this season (at Erskine, 9/11/15).

Kali Boatwright led the Jaguars with 16 kills and she collected a match-high 23 digs to complete the double-double. Jordan Bickett just fell short of a double-double with 11 kills and nine digs. She also had four service aces. Alyssa Latham tallied 43 assists. Cat DeSilvester contributed 21 digs and had four aces.

Augusta recorded 15 aces, but finished with a .112 hitting percentage.

In the deciding fifth set, Boatwright recorded a kill to knot the set at 8-all. But a pair of kills from Valmyr and Savisky forced an Augusta timeout. The Saints, after being tied at 8-all, scored the final seven points to take the match.

Flagler heads Milledgeville to take on Georgia College tomorrow (Oct. 3) at 2 p.m. in another important PBC match.
