ST. AUGUSTINE –
Katie Reed notched the game-winning goal with two minutes remaining in regulation to give the Flagler College women's soccer team its first Peach Belt Conference victory over visiting Young Harris on Saturday night at Saints Field.
The Saints (3-1-1, 1-0-0) used a balanced offensive attack in the triumph, totaling 18 shots, including 12 shots on goal. The Mountain Lions (1-4-0, 0-3-0) fired off 12 shots through 90 minutes of action, with a team-high four shots from Sydney Baird.
"In the first half we just were not good enough. Something we talked about after the game is there are no teams in this conference that you can drop your level and expect to still win the game, and we dropped our levels in the first half. It was a lot of hard work and the girls really got themselves out of the hole they dug for themselves, it was just an incredible finish," said Flagler women's soccer head coach,
Ashley Martin.
Katie Kaim, got the Saints on the board first with her second goal of the season at the 4:03 mark. Kaim took a shot from the top left corner of the box driving the ball to the back of the net. Young Harris answered back less than two minutes later on a score from Emily Ober, who scored off an assist from Amber Matthews. The Mountain Lions took the lead, 2-1, in the 26th minute on a header from Matthews. Sydney Baird help set up the score as her direct kick hit the crossbar and rebounded right in the direction of Matthews. The remaining 20 minutes were scoreless as the Mountain Lions took their lead into the intermission.
Flagler tied the game within the first five minutes of the second half with the help of
Cassie Fernandez, who tallied her first goal of the season on a header after an assist from Frida Lindbloom. The Saints dominated on offense throughout the final 45 minutes, taking 14 shots, compared to just four from the visitors. With the game tied at 2-2 and two minutes left in regulation, Mackensie Danaher connected with
Katie Reed who fired the ball from the right side of the box into the back of the net giving the Saints a 3-2 lead. Flagler was able to maintain the ball for the final two minutes and claim the victory.
Maddison Lipson turned in a complete 90 minutes between the pipes for the Saints en route to her first collegiate victory. The freshman keeper collected four saves and faced 12 shots, while the Mountain Lions relied on Arielle Charles in goal who tallied nine saves for the guests.
"A lot of credit to our players, they found ways to come back and we showed glimpses of what we're all about in the second half and we got the result," said Martin.
The Saints return to the pitch on Wednesday when they head out on a four-game road swing starting in Americus, Georgia, for a 1:30 p.m. tilt against Georgia Southwestern (2-5-0, 0-2-0).
