Saints bitten by the Sharks, 3-1

FORT LAUDERDALE – Flagler College's seven-match winning streak came to halt Saturday night as Nova Southeastern University came away with a 3-1 (20-25, 27-25, 25-14, 25-22) non-conference win at NSU Arena.

Nova Southeastern won its fifth consecutive match to improve to 9-1 overall. Flagler dropped to 7-2.

Sara Davis led the Saints with 16 kills and an efficient .552 hitting percentage. Taja Valmyr added 11 kills coming off of the bench while Megan Hooks tacked on 10 kills and three total blocks. Tara Savisky recorded her third double-double of the season with 45 assists and 11 digs. Caitlyn Kovach led the defense with a match-high 23 digs. Ashley Lechleidner-Rodriguez recorded three service aces to go along with nine digs.

Flagler hit .303 for the match with 53 kills and 13 errors on 132 swings, but 10 service errors and reception errors proved to be too much for the Saints.

The Sharks also hit .303 as a team as they had 66 kills and 20 errors on 152 swings.

Denvyr Tyler-Palmer recorded a match-high 21 kills for Nova Southeastern and completed the double-double with 11 digs. She hit .386 with four errors on 44 swings. Sydney Crook added 18 kills and three aces while Dana Holger chipped in with 15 kills and hit .344. Katie Pyles tallied 54 assists and also had three service aces. Kaelyn Brock collected 10 digs.

The match featured 40 ties and 12 lead changes. The Saints hit .344 in the first set and improved in the second with a .412 average, but lost the set, 27-25. Flagler fought off two set points, but couldn't complete the rally.

The Saints open Peach Belt Conference play on Friday (Sept. 25) against the University of North Carolina Pembroke at 7 p.m. at Flagler Gym.
