ST. AUGUSTINE – Maria Marti Bartis scored the lone goal of the game, in the 83
rd minute, to help Clayton State University escape with a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer win over Flagler College this Saturday evening at a muddy Saints Field.
Clayton State improved to 4-2-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the Peach Belt. Flagler suffered its first defeat and fell to 2-1-1 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play.
Lucy Cunningham's half volley into the box found the boot of Bartis for her fifth goal of the season.
Flagler had a chance to take a 1-0 lead in the 76
th minute when
Katie Kaim had a one-on-one with the Clayton State goalkeeper, but just couldn't get enough on the shot as Charlotte McCormack made a diving save to preserve the scoreless tie.
McCormack tallied five saves for the Lakers while
Racheal Cecil tallied three for the Saints.
Clayton State out-shot Flagler 13-10 but Flagler held the advantage in corner kicks, 8-4.
Flagler hosts Young Harris College in another Peach Belt Conference match on Saturday (Sept. 26) at 5 p.m. at Saints Field.
