No. 15 Saints make No. 14 Pirates walk the plank in 5-2 win

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Nick Oberg keyed a five-run seventh inning with a two-run home run to help lead No. 15 (Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30) Flagler College to a 5-2 win over No. 14 Armstrong State University Saturday afternoon in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game at Pirate Field.

Flagler improved to 28-9 overall and 15-7 in the Peach Belt. The Saints pull into a tie for second place with Armstrong. Both trail the University of North Georgia by a game and a half. Armstrong fell to 26-11 overall and 15-7 in conference play.

For the second consecutive game, Flagler got an outstanding performance on the hill from its starting pitcher. This time it was Danny Brown (8-3) who tossed his fifth complete game of the season as he scattered six hits, allowed two runs, walked two and struck out seven. He retired 14 batters on fly outs and another five on ground outs. Brown retired 18 of the first 21 batters he faced.

The Saints broke-up the pitchers' duel in the seventh as Todd Juliano got things started by drawing a one-out walk of Armstrong starter Corey Kafka (4-2). The next batter, Oberg, hit a two-run home run to give Flagler the lead. Skylar Fox hit an infield single and Igor Baez followed with a single to right, but a bobble by the right fielder allowed Fox to take third base. Andrew Brodbeck followed with a double down the right field line scoring Fox and Baez took third. Kolin McMillen lifted a fly ball to left field which allowed Baez to score giving the Saints a 4-0 lead. Lorenzo Butler doubled home Baez to give the Saints a five-run cushion.

Brown, who was on cruise control going into the seventh, hit a small bump in the road. JT Phillips led off the seventh with a single and then advanced to second on a balk. He took third on Berry Aldridge's single which gave the Pirates runners on the corners with nobody out. Two batters later, Zach Lance singled home Phillips and Aldridge scored later on a sacrifice fly.

The Pirates had a runner on base in both the eighth and ninth innings, but never could get them home, let alone into scoring position.

Shawn Hendon collected two singles while Fox went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Kafka surrendered six hits, allowed four runs, walked two and struck out two in 6.1 innings. Ryan Good finished the game for Armstrong.

Lance went 2-for-3 with a double and one run batted in.

The same two teams meet tomorrow (April 12) at 1 p.m. at Pirate Field.
