SAVANNAH, Ga. – No. 15 (
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30) Flagler College got another superb outing on the hill from
Mike O'Reilly who tossed his first complete game shutout with 6-0 win over No. 14 Armstrong State University Friday afternoon in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game at Pirate Field.
Flagler improved to 27-9 overall and 14-7 in the Peach Belt. The Saints also pull to within one game of first place behind Armstrong and the University of North Georgia. Armstrong fell to 26-10 overall and 15-6 in conference play.
O'Reilly (6-2) has won his last two starts in a row. He scattered seven hits, walked two and struck out nine to earn the win. O'Reilly retired 12 batters on fly outs and another four on ground outs. He retired the first six of seven batters he faced and allowed just five base runners to reach scoring position.
The Saints took advantage of a Pirate miscue to plate three unearned runs in the first inning. After
Andrew Brodbeck led off the game with a single,
Kolin McMillen reached on a fielding error by the Armstrong shortstop. The Saints loaded the bases with a walk, but
Nick Kranick hit a grounder back to Armstrong pitcher Caleb Weaver (2-1) who flipped the ball to home plate for the force out.
Shawn Hendon kept on his torrid pace with a single to right field which allowed McMillen to coast home with the game's first run. Two batters later,
Nick Oberg ripped a two-run double to center field and the Saints took a 3-0 lead.
Flagler added a single run in the second and two more in the seventh for insurance.
Brodbeck collected three singles while
Lorenzo Butler singled twice, scored two runs and drove in another. Hendon singled twice and knocked in a pair of runs.
Weaver tossed 6.2 innings, allowed 10 hits and three earned runs. He walked two and struck out four.
R.J. Dennard hit a pair of doubles for the Pirates.
The two teams are scheduled to meet tomorrow (April 11) at 1 p.m., but the forecast does not look promising.
