PENSACOLA, Fla. – Flagler College split a pair of games at the West Florida Invitational Saturday afternoon at Jim Spooner Field. Flagler won the opener 8-1 over Rollins College and then suffered a 9-0 loss to the host team, the University of West Florida.
Flagler is now 3-1 on the season.
In the opener,
Danny Brown (1-0) tossed a complete game six hitter as the only run he allowed was unearned. He struck out nine and walked one batter.
Kolin McMillen got the Saints on the board first with an RBI-single to right field in the third inning and then he and
Igor Baez later scored on
Nick Kranick's double to give Flagler a 3-0 lead.
Jon Roszel added a run-scoring double in the eighth and Flagler sent nine men to the plate in the ninth and scored three more runs. Kranick and
Lorenzo Butler hit back-to-back RBI-singles.
McMillen singled three times, scored twice and drove in a run. Kranick singled twice, hit a double, collected three runs batted in and scored another. Roszel hit a pair of doubles and knocked in a run.
Matt Tulley (0-2) tossed seven innings for the Tars. He allowed six hits and three runs. Tulley finished with seven strikeouts.
Peter Nicoletto singled twice and added a double for Rollins.
In the nightcap, Flagler ran into a tough pitcher in West Florida's Brandon Nagem (2-0) who hurled eight shutout innings, allowed two hits and fanned five batters.
The Argonauts erupted for three runs in the third inning, led by Nic Strasser's two-run double to left. West Florida scored a single tally in the fifth and then plated five in the seventh.
Five different Argonaut players had two hits as West Florida pounded out 13 hits as a team. Strasser went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Kyle Hamner singled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored another.
Mike O'Reilly (1-1) tossed four innings and allowed six hits, two earned runs, walked two and struck out four.
Michael Hanke,
Kyle Schackne and
Brandan Keen saw relief action.
Andrew Brodbeck and
Todd Juliano both singled for the Saints.
Flagler takes on Albany State University of Georgia on Sunday (Feb. 8) at 3:30 p.m. Central to wrap up the tournament.
