PENSACOLA, Fla. – Flagler College pounded out 11 hits with only two being of the extra base variety in a 13-3 thumping of Albany State University in the final game of the West Florida Invitational Sunday afternoon at Jim Spooner Field. The game ended in the sixth inning due to the mercy rule.
Flagler leaves the "Panhandle" with a 4-1 record while Albany State, a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, is now 1-4.
Lorenzo Butler got the Saints on the board with his RBI double in the bottom of the first inning.
Flagler got to Albany State starter Sahir Fersob (0-1) in the fourth inning after
Kolin McMillen hit a two-run double to give the Saints a 3-0 lead.
The Saints scored two more runs in the fifth, one on a wild pitch by Fersob and the other on a sacrifice fly hit by
Jon Roszel.
Flagler added two runs in the eighth before a six-run eighth inning prompted the mercy rule. A couple of bases loaded walks preceded the game-ending RBI single hit by
Nick Oberg.
Michael Maiocco (2-0) tossed five scoreless innings, scattered four hits and struck out four batters to earn his second win in as many appearances.
Chris Lake and
Justin Ratte closed the game.
Oberg singled three times and plated two runs while Butler went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs batted in and he scored two runs.
Andrew Brodbeck collected two singles and scored four runs.
Eight different Rams had a base hit.
Fersob tossed 4.2 innings, allowed six hits, five runs, walked two batters and struck out two.
Flagler welcomes No. 3 (Collegiate Baseball Division II Preseason Poll) Lander University this weekend in the Peach Belt Conference opener for both teams. The two will meet in a doubleheader on Saturday (Feb. 14) at noon at Drysdale Field and then the rubber game will be played on Sunday (Feb. 15) at 1 p.m.
