Flagler rallies past Armstrong for 64-59 win

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Lydell Manigo came off the bench to score all of his 15 points in the second half to help rally Flagler College past Armstrong State University 64-59 in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Wednesday night at Alumni Arena.

Flagler snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 9-11 overall and 4-9 in the Peach Belt. The Saints are now tied with the Pirates for fifth place and is one game out of fourth place in the PBC's East Division. Armstrong suffered its second consecutive loss and has now dropped four-of-its-last-five games to go to 6-13 overall and 4-9 in conference play.

Manigo came off the bench for the first time this season, after starting the previous 19 games, played sparingly in the first half, but erupted in 14 minutes of play in the second half with 5 of 7 shooting from the field and he made four three-pointers. He added five rebounds to his line.

Kessler Bell tallied 15 points on 4 of 6 shooting and he knocked down three treys and made 4 of 5 from the free throw line. Bell also grabbed seven rebounds. Keshaun Hamilton recorded 12 points and a pair of blocked shots while Jerrell Oxendine chipped in with 10 points, four rebounds and four assists. Dennis Diaz contributed eight points and seven rebounds.

Shema Sabiti recorded a double-double for Armstrong with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Emmanuel Tiluscar led the Pirates with a team-high 12 points and tallied four steals. Jonathan Blair came off the bench to add 10 points and nine rebounds while Trey Suttles tacked on 10 points.

Armstrong out-rebounded Flagler 47-37 and grabbed 22 offensive rebounds which were converted into 18 points. The Pirates out-scored the Saints inside 22-12.

The Saints got out to an early 8-0 lead and expanded the gap to 11 (19-8) after a Hamilton basket with 11:37 to go in the first half.

Armstrong closed the first half on a 13-4 run to go into the half with a 28-25 lead.

The Pirates led by as many as seven (38-31) in the second half, but the Saints were able to chip away and tie the game at 45 after Hamilton made the first of two free throws with 7:08 to go. Armstrong ran into a cold spell where it couldn't buy a basket. The Pirates went 5:06 without scoring a field goal which allowed the Saints to turn a two-point deficit into a four-point lead. In the waning moments of Armstrong's struggles, Manigo sank a three-pointer to give Flagler a 48-45 lead with 6:17 to go, the Saints' first lead since the 3:35 mark of the first half.

Flagler never trailed the rest of the way and kept the game at a two possession contest until the final horn.

Flagler hosts Francis Marion University on Saturday (Feb. 7) at 6 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium on "Coaches vs. Cancer Night."
