Saints sweep again with 6-4 victory

ST. AUGUSTINE – Shawn Hendon's RBI-single to right ignited a three-run sixth inning which broke a 3-all tie and propelled No. 24 (Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Top 30) Flagler College to a 6-4 win over Georgia College in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Sunday afternoon at Drysdale Field.

Flagler extended its winning streak to eight games and improved to 11-1 overall and remains undefeated in Peach Belt play at 6-0. The winning streak is the program's longest since finishing the 2013 campaign on a nine-game streak. The 11-1 start is Flagler's best start since opening the 2001 season at 12-1. Georgia College falls to 3-7 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

With the score tied at 3-all in the bottom of the sixth, Flagler's Lorenzo Butler greeted Georgia College reliever Conner Alford (1-1) with a base hit to left field. Butler then stole second and took third on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Hendon lofted a 1-2 pitch down the right field line allowing Butler to score easily with the go-ahead run. Hendon took second on a wild pitch and then moved to third on a fly ball. Hendon scored on Dylan Jones's double down the right field line to give the Saints a 5-3 lead. Igor Baez followed with a single through the right side of the infield and Jones just beat the throw to the plate.

The Bobcats threatened in the seventh with runners on second and third with no one out after a leadoff single by Colton Montgomery and a double by Jake Sandlin. Flagler's Kyle Schackne came on in relief of Justin Ratte (1-0), the Saints' second pitcher of the day, and retired the side with a lie out and two strikeouts.

Schackne ran into his own trouble in the ninth inning as he had the bases loaded and one out. Clay Ardeeser chased him from the game with an RBI-single to cut Flagler's lead to 6-4. Michael Hanke came in got an infield fly to first base and struck out Steve Hazel to end the game.

Ratte tossed 2.2 innings and scattered four hits, allowed an unearned run and struck out two to pick up his first win of the season. Hanke recorded his second save of the season. Michael Maiocco started the game and tossed 3.1 innings. He surrendered two hits, two runs, walked three and struck out two.

Jones paced the offense for the Saints with a single, a double; he scored two runs and drove in another. Andrew Brodbeck was hit by a pitch twice, stole a base and collected one run batted in.

Alford tossed two-thirds of an inning and allowed four hits and three runs for the Bobcats. Cameron Busby started the game for Georgia College and tossed five innings and gave up four hits and three runs.

Sandlin went 2-for-4 with a double while Dylan Cook collected two singles, scored a run and knocked in another. Josh Davis hit a two-run single in the fourth.

The Bobcats stranded 10 runners on base, five of which were in scoring position.

Flagler is back in action on Wednesday (Feb. 25) against Rollins College at 6 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
