ST. AUGUSTINE – A dominant day on the mound from the No. 24 (Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30) Flagler College baseball pitching staff led to two victories in Peach Belt Conference play for the Saints against Georgia College, 3-0 and 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field.
Flagler improved on its best start since the 2001 season, 10-1 overall and 5-0 in conference action, while Georgia College dropped to 3-6 and 0-2 in its first PBC games of the year.
Danny Brown (3-0) was nearly flawless for the Saints, tossing his third complete game of the season. The right hander threw just 104 pitches and fanned eight Bobcat batters. Jake Anthony (1-1) took the loss for Georgia College, throwing seven innings, while Bryce Bush came in and the eighth for the visitors.
The story of game one was a pitcher's duel for the majority of the game, with only three hits for either side through the first five innings.
Todd Juliano singled twice for the Saints, once in the second inning and again in the fifth, but was stranded both times.
Flagler led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to left from John Roszel, and put in
Bryce Evans to pinch run at first. Juliano moved Evans into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, followed by a double by
Igor Baez to score the first run of the day.
Logan Mattix threatened for the Bobcats in the top of the eighth with a single up the middle, but Brown quickly struck out the next two batters. In the bottom of the inning
Nick Kranick found his way into scoring position with a double down the right field line, and then a home run over the left field fence from
Skylar Fox gave the Saints two runs of insurance.
Brown shut down the side in the top of the ninth, as the Saints won game one, 3-0.
In the second game, Flagler scored early as
Kolin McMillen lead off the first inning with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly. The Saints opened the game with three hits in the first.
Flagler added another run in the third inning with the help of hits from
Andrew Brodbeck and
Lorenzo Butler, then again in the fifth inning when Broadbeck scored on a single by Kranick.
Georgia College cut the deficit to one run in the top of the sixth after Brandon Benson knocked out a two-run homerun. The Bobcats loaded the bases with one out, but
Michael Hanke came out of the bullpen and helped the Saints get out of the inning and hang on to win game two, 3-2.
Hanke gave up just one hit in 3.2 innings, earning his first save of the year, while
Mike O'Reilly (3-1) started the game on the mound for the Saints. Georgia College used a trio of pitchers, John Clark, Charlie Hecht and Jordan Brooks, with the starter, Clark, earning the loss.
The Saints tallied 10 hits, with four different players contributing two hits apiece. Flagler was impressive on the base paths, finishing the game with four stolen bases, including two stolen bases from Brodbeck.
Georgia College was led by the bats of Brandon Benson and Dylan Cook, who each notched two hits.
Flagler will hosts the Bobcats in game three of the series tomorrow (Feb. 22) at 1 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
