ST. AUGUSTINE –
Kolin McMillen's single up the middle plated
Frankie Sagarese from second as No. 24 (Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30) Flagler College squeezed out a 6-5, 10-inning win over Edward Waters College in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday evening at Drysdale Field.
Flagler won its fifth game in a row to improve to 8-1 overall while Edward Waters dropped to 6-4.
Sagarese led off the 10
th inning by working a walk and took second on
Josh Pagliei's sacrifice bunt to third base. Two batters later, McMillen stroked a 2-2 pitch back up the middle and Sagarese sprinted around third and scored standing up to end the game.
The Saints took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning with the help of a defensive miscue by the Tigers. With the bases loaded and one out, McMillen grounded to shortstop for what should have been an inning ending double play. EWC got the force at second base, but the throw to first was errant.
Sam Komel, who was at third base, scored on the play and then Sagarese, who was on second, was able to score due to the error to give Flagler a two-run lead.
Flagler held a 4-2 lead going into the top of the ninth.
Brandan Keen came on to close the game for the Saints, but was greeted with a lead-off single by Jose Visaez and then walked the next batter Bryan Rodriguez. Keen was lifted for
MacLain Larson who closed out Sunday's win over Lander University. Juan Bracamonte reached base due to catcher's interference which loaded the bases with no one out. The Tigers executed a squeeze bunt, put down by Jordan Pontius to cut the deficit to 4-3. Jesse Baker followed with a two-run single to center and Edward Waters held a 5-4 lead. Larson retired the next two hitters to get out of the inning.
In the home-half of the ninth,
Andrew Brodbeck drew a one-out walk. He stole second base before
Nick Kranick flew out to Alberto Rivera at third base.
Lorenzo Butler reached on an error by Rivera which allowed Brodbeck to score, tying the game 5-all.
Michael Hanke (1-0) picked up the win in relief. He retired all three batters he faced and struck out one.
Jabe Molinaro hit two doubles for the Saints and Butler collected a pair of singles.
Richard Edwards (0-1) took the loss for the Tigers.
Baker collected three singles and drove in two runs. Visaez singled twice and scored a run.
Flagler hosts Georgia College on Saturday (Feb. 21) at 1 p.m. in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader.
