ST. AUGUSTINE – The University of North Carolina Pembroke came in with the 10
th-best field goal percentage defense and the 12
th-best scoring defense in the country and showed Flagler College why with a 69-49 victory in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Wednesday evening at Flagler Gymnasium.
UNC Pembroke has won three of its last four games to improve to 9-15 overall and 7-10 in the Peach Belt. The Braves are tied for fourth place in the East Division. Flagler, who defeated UNCP last month (50-46), lost its fourth game in a row and dropped to 7-17 overall and 4-13 in conference play.
UNCP's Avae Hardy was the lone player to score in double figures for either team with 11 points. Airico Williams added nine points while Katelyn Mitchell tacked on nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Kierra Haney tallied eight points, five rebounds and blocked three shots.
The Braves held the Saints to 26.5% shooting and they blocked nine shots. UNCP out-rebounded Flagler 52-40.
Alex Alford came off the bench to lead the Saints with nine points.
Teosha Ray added eight points and five rebounds.
DeAsha Campbell contributed seven points and a season-high six steals.
Flagler forced 25 UNC Pembroke turnovers, but scored only 15 points.
The Braves used a 16-4 spurt midway through the first half to blow open a seven-point lead to a 19-point margin.
Flagler hosts the University of Montevallo on Saturday (Feb. 21) at 1:30 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium. Prior to the game Flagler will honor its two seniors:
