Hooks’ match-high 17 kills not enough in 3-1 loss at Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Megan Hooks tied her career-high with 17 kills but it wasn't enough as the University of Montevallo snapped Flagler College's five-match winning streak with a 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-16, 25-21) victory in a Peach Belt Conference volleyball match Friday night at Trustmark Arena.

Montevallo snapped its two-match win streak to improve to 19-10 overall and 10-5 in the Peach Belt. Flagler fell to 18-6 overall and 11-4 in conference play.

Hooks' 17 kills matches her amount she had last month (Oct. 16) at Lander University. She added five total blocks to her line. Sara Davis added 13 kills and six total blocks. Tara Savisky recorded her team-best 12th double-double with 45 assists and 11 digs. Caitlyn Kovach and Shea Hamilton combined for 40 digs, each with 20. Ashley Lechleidner-Rodriguez added another 15 digs.

Flagler was held to a .106 hitting percentage which included a -.020 mark in the third set.

Rebekah Phelps recorded a double-double for the Falcons with 13 kills and 12 digs. Chandler Cooper added 12 more kills while Kristy Bohan finished with 11 kills and five total blocks. Briana Marquez tallied 43 assists while Carissa Bell gathered a match-high 29 digs.

The Saints looked strong early as they held a 16-11 lead in the first set after back-to-back hitting errors by Bohan and Cooper. Bohan was blocked by Davis and Hooks. After the Cooper miscue, the Falcons called a timeout. The Falcons went on a 6-1 run to tie the set at 17 after a Phelps kill and the Saints called timeout. Later, a hitting error by Davis gave Montevallo the lead for good (21-20). A kill by Marquez gave the Falcons set point 24-21. But a kill by Davis and a double-block by Savisky and Davis cut the deficit to 24-23. However, Taja Valmyr's serve went out of bounds and the Falcons took the set.

In the second set, an ace by Bohan got Montevallo to within a point (16-15), but a kill by Davis and two more by Hooks expanded Flagler's lead to 19-15. Flagler went on to take the set 25-22.

The Falcons never trailed in the third set, but a 6-1 run gave Montevallo the necessary breathing room for a 25-16 win.

Montevallo had a 16-12 lead midway through the fourth set and had to withstand a furious run by Flagler late. Down 21-17 and coming out of a timeout, Ashley Cheewah recorded a kill and then Rachel Bryant and Hooks followed to bring the Saints to within one point (21-20). The Falcons called timeout and then ran off three consecutive points to give Montevallo a 24-20 lead. Phelps finished off the set with a kill to give Montevallo the set, 25-21, and the match.

Flagler takes on Columbus State University tomorrow (Nov. 7) at 3 p.m. in its final regular season road match of the season.
