SAVANNAH, Ga. – Armstrong State University squeezed out a 3-2 (25-20, 18-25, 17-25, 25-20, 18-16) win over arch-rival Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference volleyball match Wednesday night at The ARC.
Armstrong won its seventh match in a row to improve to 9-4 overall and remain undefeated in the Peach Belt at 5-0. Flagler fell to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
Since Flagler joined the PBC in 2009, the two teams have split the 20 matches played, but Armstrong has reeled off the last nine wins in the series. In that run by the Pirates, this was the fourth match to be settled in five sets.
Sara Davis led the Saints with a match-high 16 kills and she added three aces as well as three block assists to her line.
Genel Sturgeon and
Megan Hooks each came off the bench to provided 10 kills. Hooks also added three block assists.
Ashley Cheewah hit an efficient .583 with eight kills and she tacked on a pair of block assists.
Tara Savisky notched her sixth double-double of the season with 44 assists and 10 digs.
Caitlyn Kovach paced the back row with 23 digs.
Flagler was held to its lowest hitting percentage, 173, of the season since the opening match against the University of Sioux Falls. The Saints also had 16 service errors.
Raquel Kulak led the Pirates with 12 kills and five total blocks. Anna McGee recorded 10 kills, had four block assists and three aces. Selene Ushela was busy as she collected a match-high 41 digs. Kristi Vaughn just missed a double-double with 22 assists and nine digs.
Armstrong finished with 12 total team blocks and 87 digs.
For a match that last five sets, there were only 10 ties and four lead changes in the entire match. There were seven ties and three lead changes in the fifth set alone.
The Pirates led 14-13 after a
Taja Valmyr hitting error. After a timeout by the Saints, Valmyr redeemed herself with a kill to break the first match point. Davis followed with a kill and the Saints held match point (15-14). A costly service error tied the set up again and Brittany Hereth put away a kill to give the Pirates their second match point (16-15). Kulak's attempt to end the match went for not and the set was all square at 16. Kulak made up for her miscue with a kill and then Raegen Grooms ended the match with a kill for the Pirates.
Flagler hosts Columbus State University Friday (Oct. 9) night at 7 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium in a Peach Belt Conference match.
