ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Ally Barys' golden goal in the 98th minute gave the visiting Bobcats of Georgia College a 1-0 victory over the Flagler College women's soccer on Saturday afternoon at Saints Field. The match was the regular season finale for both teams.
The Saints fell to 8-5-2 overall and 5-5-1 in Peach Belt Conference action, while Georgia College improved to 9-7-2 overall and 8-4-0 in conference play. With the win, the Bobcats secured the fourth-seed and will host a quarterfinal round match in next week's PBC Tournament.
Prior to the start of the match, Flagler honored its five seniors:
Taryn Bates,
Alison Bondy,
Jess Fassnidge,
Cassie Fernandez and
Beate Jaeckel.
Barys' goal came off the Bobcats only corner kick of the match. Sol Baldassini served the ball from the corner into the box, as Barys headed it past the Saints' keeper for the game-winning goal at the 97:40 mark. Earlier in the overtime period Fassnidge gave the Saints a chance with a shot that bounced off the post, but rolled away from the goal.
Flagler dominated on possession throughout the match, taking the advantage on shots (19-11) and corner kicks (11-1).
Katie Reed fired off a team-high five shots, while Fassnidge and Fernandez added three shots apiece to the Saints' offense. Barys led the way for the Georgia College offense tallying three shots in the outing, all of which were on goal.
Ashley Graham collected five saves in her third shutout of the season in goal for Georgia College, as Rachael Cecil turned in seven saves between the pipes for Flagler.
"We've got to brush ourselves down and look forward to a quarterfinal matchup. We don't know exactly who it is at this point, but we have a good idea. So now we just have to prepare ourselves for another road trip and hopefully turn our luck around," said head coach
Ashley Martin.
The Saints will find out later this evening following the results of the Armstrong and Lander match where they will be headed on Tuesday for the quarterfinal of the PBC Tournament.
