ST. AUGUSTINE –
Annie Breen headed in
Brooke DeLauder's free kick from the right corner in the 93
rd minute to lead Flagler College to its first win over Lander University, 2-1, in overtime in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Saturday afternoon at Saints Field.
Flagler improved to 7-2-1 overall and 5-2-0 in the Peach Belt. The Saints tied its record for most wins in the PBC since joining the league in 2009 (5, 2011). Lander, which was 7-0-1 against Flagler all-time, had its two-match winning streak snapped and fell to 6-5-0 overall and 4-3-0 in conference play.
DeLauder, who usually takes corner kicks for the Saints, had a virtual corner kick when a Lander player committed a foul in the far right corner to set up the free kick. She lofted a ball into the box and the 5-foot-11 freshman defender (Breen) rose up in a mass of humanity in front of the net and headed down a ball which crossed the goal line to end the match.
Flagler struck early in the contest when
Katie Reed gathered a chip from
Frida Lindblom and blasted a shot with her right foot into the lower left side of the goal in the sixth minute.
The Bearcats were able to score the equalizer in the 86
th minute when Alexis Rogers' free kick from about 30 yards out skipped on the ground and went through the hands of a diving
Racheal Cecil in goal for the Saints.
Cecil made four saves for the Saints while her counterpart, Shannon DeSantis, tallied one and the Bearcats had one team save.
Lander out-sot Flagler 13-9 and held a slight 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Flagler hosts No. 16 (NSCAA Division II Top 25) Rollins College on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. at Saints Field. Rollins suffered a 2-1 loss in overtime at Nova Southeastern University this evening.
