Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Flagler edges Rollins, 1-0

ST. AUGUSTINE – In a defensive battle, it was a defensive miscue that led to the match's only goal as Flagler College downed Rollins College 1-0 in a non-conference women's soccer match Wednesday night at Saints Field.

Flagler has won six-of-its-last-seven matches and improved to 8-2-1 overall. The eight wins this season doubles the amount Flagler won a year ago (4-12-1) and are the most wins the Saints have recorded since 2011 when they posted a 9-8-1 record. Flagler also snapped a four-match losing streak to Rollins with the last win coming Oct. 17, 2007 by the same score and at Saints Field. Rollins lost its second match in a row, and its third in its last four, to drop to 9-5-0 overall.

Flagler's Fio Fustagno was knocked down in the box by Rollins' Courtney Gladden, who picked up her first yellow card of the match. She got her second with just 21 seconds remaining and was sent to the bench. Beate Jaeckel took the penalty kick for the Saints but her initial shot was saved by Carly Stevens, but Jaeckel gathered the rebound and touched the ball past the goal line in the 66th minute to give the Saints the lead.

The Saints had a chance earlier (60') to take a 1-0 lead. Katie Reed intercepted a pass and dribbled the ball across midfield, but her through ball to Kennedy Singleton led her just a bit too much and Stevens was able to scoop up the ball in front of the goal box.

Flagler goalkeeper Racheal Cecil came up with a pair of nice saves for the Saints in the final 24 minutes to preserve the shutout. Paxton Sickler had an excellent opportunity to score for the Tars just several yards in front of the goal, but Cecil cut her off, forcing the shot to go wide left. The two players collided and Cecil remained down for a minute, but quickly got to her feet for the final 1:50.

Cecil turned in her third clean sheet of the season and tallied six saves, which ties her season-high. Stevens recorded for saves for the Tars.

Rollins out-shot Flagler 13-12, but the Saints held a 5-3 in corner kicks.

Flagler heads out on the road to take on No. 12 University of North Georgia on Saturday (Oct. 24) at 1 p.m. That match will begin a swing where the Saints will play four matches in one week to close out the regular season. Three of those matches are on the road.
