AIKEN, S.C. –
Teosha Ray scored a team-high 16 points and added seven rebounds, but Flagler College came out on the short end of a 61-53 score at the University of South Carolina Aiken in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Monday evening at the Convocation Center.
USC Aiken extended its winning streak to two games and improved to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in the Peach Belt. Flagler lost its fifth game in a row and fell to 2-8 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
USCA's Kassy Johannsen led all scorers with 18 points before fouling out of the game with 1:57 left in the game. Emry Tsitouris recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Mackenzie Reese also had 15 points and 10 boards, but she added five assists and three steals. Reese made 7 of 10 from the field.
The Pacers shot 50% (13-26) from the field in the second half. USC Aiken led at the half 26-22.
Ray drained three 3-pointers on five attempts. The PBC Player of the Week,
Parker Nayman, added 10 points and nine rebounds while
DeAsha Campbell tacked on 10 points.
Treva Mason corralled 10 rebounds to lead the Saints. She also broke the school's all-time rebounding record of 793, held by Brittney Garmon (2004-08) in the process.
Flagler's 28.6% (18-63) shooting percentage was its lowest since the Florida Tech game on Dec. 15 (25.4%). The Saints out-rebounded the Pacers 43-40 and had 18 offensive rebounds which led to 11 second chance points.
The Saints jumped out to a 12-6 lead after
Tiffany Hodge made a turn-around jumper in the lane with 15:29 to go in the first half. The Pacers followed with a 10-2 run to take a shot-lived 16-14 lead. After Nayman made a short jumper in the paint to tie the game, Jasmine Coach received an outlet pass and beat the Flagler defense down to the basket for a layup to put USC Aiken up for good 18-16 with 9:10 left.
Flagler remains on the road and will face Francis Marion University on Wednesday (Jan. 7) at 5:30 p.m. at Florence, South Carolina.
